Huntsville Pediatric Dentist
A pediatric dentist is a specialist with extra post-graduate training. Dr. Brad Beasley isn't a pediatric dentist, but is a general dentist who loves to treat children.
Many families like to be able to all go to the same dentist. That way they get to know the dentist better and feel more comfortable talking about their children's dental problems.
At Beasley Dentistry, we try to make your
child's dental visits fun. We strongly recommend that you
schedule routine visits when your child is quite young,
so they do not associate our office with the pain and anxiety
of a dental emergency.
Pediatric Dentistry Tips for Parents
• Make brushing a non-negotiable part
of your child's daily routine, from a very early age.
• Make sure your child is only using
a pea-sized amount of toothpaste, on a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Kids tend to swallow toothpaste, which is OK in small amounts,
but not a great idea if they are using more than the recommended
amount. Teach your child to spit out the toothpaste right
from the start - they will enjoy the novelty of you telling
them to spit.
• Be careful when choosing your child's
toothpaste. Many commercially available toothpastes (even
ones marketed to kids) have very strong flavorings that
can sting little mouths. It may take some trial and error,
but be willing to sacrifice a few tubes to find a flavor
your child enjoys.
• Make brushing fun! Let them pretend
to brush their favorite toy's teeth, or have them "sing"
a familiar song while they are brushing (we like "Yankee
Doodle"). This can have the added benefit of getting
your child to brush for the duration of the song, rather
than just swishing the toothbrush around for 10 seconds
or so.
• For older kids, fluoride treatments
can be very beneficial. Once your child's permanent teeth
have come in, fluoride treatments can make his teeth more
resistant to decay and may even help to remineralize early
decay spots on the teeth.
• Your older child can be taught to
floss as soon as she has the dexterity to do it herself.
There are pediatric dentist specialists with special training
in complex issues relating to the dental care of children.
For cases that require a specialist's attention, Dr. Beasley
will refer your child to a pediatric dentist specialist.
But for ordinary preventive and restorative care, we feel
very comfortable seeing your children here.
