Find out how dental implants can give you back the smile you implants

Tooth loss doesn’t have to be forever, especially when you have our Athens, AL, dentist, Dr. R. Brad Beasley, on your side. If you are missing one or more permanent teeth then it’s time you found out what dental implants can do to restore your smile.

Most people want a replacement tooth that is as close to a real tooth as possible. While dentures or dental bridges may be less expensive and quicker to get, they don’t offer the same amazing benefits as dental implants. Implants are the only tooth replacements that truly work in much the same way as a natural tooth.

What does an implant do?

This small metal post or screw is placed into the jawbone to take the place of your missing tooth roots. While you may not realize it, the tooth roots are so very important to the health of your mouth, particularly your jawbone. Your jawbone needs tooth roots in order to remain stable and strong. If you lose a tooth the jawbone will also begin to deteriorate. The only way to prevent bone loss is to place an implant where your missing tooth roots used to be.

How do you get implants?

Getting dental implants in Athens is a multi-step process that includes:

Your Consultation

We need to make sure that your mouth is healthy enough for getting dental implants. This means that we will need to examine your mouth and also run X-rays to check the health of your mouth, particularly the health of your jawbone (since it will need to be strong enough to support the implant).

Placing the Implant

The first step after your consultation is to place the implant into the jawbone. Once the implant is placed there is a waiting period as the implant fuses with the jawbone. Once this is complete we will open the gums up again to place an artificial structure known as an abutment, which will serve to connect the implant with a dental crown.

Securing the Dental Crown

Once the abutment has been placed we will then secure the dental crown over the abutment to complete your restoration.

Not sure which type of crown is right for you? Dr. R. Brad Beasley, who practices cosmetic dentistry at Beasley Dentistry in Athens, AL dental crownsand serving Huntsville, AL, explains how you can benefit from a porcelain crown.

What are crowns?

Crowns, also called caps, are hollow restorations that slip over teeth. They not only offer stability, but also improve the appearance of your teeth. Weak, damaged or cracked teeth are more likely to fracture, which can result in tooth loss if the break is severe. Adding a crown to your tooth prevents painful fractures that can ruin the look and function of your teeth.

Sometimes, there are no warning signs before a tooth breaks. If you already have a broken tooth, a crown provides a simple way to restore it. Crowns are also used to hide discolorations, lengthen short teeth and conceal imperfections, such as discolorations, bumps and crooked teeth.

Why should I choose a porcelain crown in Huntsville?

If you're considering a crown, you'll probably be offered two options: porcelain or porcelain-fused-to-metal restorations. Porcelain-fused-to-metal was the only crown type available for many years. Thanks to its metal base, the crown can withstand years of wear and tear.

Although porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns certainly have benefits, they also have two drawbacks that many patients don't like. Porcelain is an excellent choice for crowns because it reflects light the same way your natural tooth enamel does. Unfortunately, it becomes opaque, rather than translucent, when it's fused to a metal crown, which can make your new restoration more noticeable than you would like.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns also create an unavoidable dark line at the spot where your tooth meets the gum line. If you're like most people, you want your dental work to blend in with your smile, not stand out.

Choosing a crown made completely of porcelain prevents these problems. Porcelain crowns are extremely durable and are an excellent choice if you would like to retain the natural appearance of your smile.

Porcelain crowns are one of the most versatile cosmetic dentistry restorations available. If your smile could benefit from a crown, call Dr. Beasley, your Huntsville, AL dentist at Beasley Dentistry, at (888) 860-5114 to schedule an appointment.
