What causes dental phobia?

Fear of dental treatments takes many forms. Some people just experience a vague "butterflies" in the stomach feeling. Others sweat, shake, and feel their hearts race. Others still are so frightened they neglect in-office care altogether, creating serious oral and systemic health issues.

What makes patients so nervous? Here are some common reasons:

  1. Embarrassment over the condition of their smiles
  2. Past bad experiences at other dental practices
  3. Inability to sit still in a dental chair
  4. Claustrophobia
  5. Concern about dental pain

How Dr. Beasley can help

Harvard Health reports that globally, anywhere from 13 to 24 percent of adults experience varying degrees of dental phobia. At Beasley Cosmetic & General Dentistry, Dr. Beasley and his team offer a warm, welcoming, and stress-free atmosphere in their beautiful Athens and Huntsville sedation-friendly area office.

However, for those who need more help, Dr. Beasley delivers sedation dentistry options. He is fully qualified in administering these medications and in Advanced Cardiac Life Support as well.

Most restorative dental procedures, such as fillings, crowns, and root canals, may be performed with a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and surrounding tissues. For overall relaxation, patients can use oral sedation--tranquilizers (such as Valium or Versed) in pill form taken at the office just before their procedures. Also, Dr. Beasley offers nitrous oxide for additional relaxation.

Your dental appointment under sedation

To qualify you for sedation, Dr. Beasley will review your medical history, including your current health conditions, medications, allergies, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Dear Doctor says the sedatives are administered under the tongue (sublingually), or you may just swallow a small pill. Soon, you'll feel very relaxed.

Some people doze off during their treatments, and likely, you won't remember much of your visit. But, rest assured, you'll get your dental work finished, and your smile and health will be the better for it.
