If you fear the dentist and you are skipping out on visits, it may be doing more harm to your mouth and body than you think. Millions of Americans avoid the dentist merely because of the dread of pain. An estimated 75 million people in the United States live with some type of dental fear, some children and some adults. Dental fears can stem from:Sedation Dentistry Patient
  • Prior painful or negative experiences
  • Feeling helpless or out of control in a dental situation
  • Feeling embarrassed about neglecting your teeth
  • Fear of being ridiculed about neglecting your teeth.
  • Parents or siblings have a fear which plays a role in your fear
Seeking dental care is imperative for your health, and Beasley Cosmetic & General Dentistry for Oral Health and Aesthetics in Huntsville has a solution to your dental doubts: Sedation dentistry.

Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry has become a common trend for patients who are nervous about visiting the dentist. Sedation is used to keep the patient at contentment and ease during dental services. Our dentist has received sedation training and will safely monitor you during the procedure. There are different options a patient may choose for sedation. Types of sedation include:
  • Nitrous Oxide - This is commonly known as laughing gas. It is used to decrease pain and anxiety. It is very useful for children so they may relax and are more likely to cooperate.
  • Oral Sedation Dentistry – Our sedation dentist will administer anti-anxiety medicine about an hour before the procedure. This will allow the patient to relax but they are still fully alert.
  • Anti-Anxiety Pill – An anti-anxiety or sleeping pill may also be prescribed the night before the appointment. This can help the patient with falling asleep and getting well-needed rest.

Sedation can be useful if:

  • You do not want to be aware of what is happening
  • You want some help to relax
  • You want to get your teeth fixed as quickly as possible
Patients will find that using sedation dentistry will make going to the dentist a more pleasant experience. Some patients may not even recall the visit and feel that the treatment only lasted a few minutes, when it may have taken a few hours.

Other Calming Techniques

  • Yoga has been known to help patients obtain techniques for breathing and relaxation.
  • Listen to your iPod or MP3 player during the visit. This can keep your mind on something else.
  • If your dental office has a TV, use it to your advantage. Watch your favorite show and focus on that instead of what’s going on with your teeth.
  • Therapy or hypnotherapy sessions can also be an option for patients who find this has worked in other situations.
Our office wants to do anything we can to get you back to the dentist, which is why we offer sedation dentistry for Huntsville area patients. We hope you will find these techniques useful and will persuade you that seeing us is easy and important. Contact our dental office in Huntsville today by calling (888) 860-5114 for more information on sedation dentistry or to schedule an appointment.

ActressFlorenceHendersonYouAreNeverTooOldToStraightenYourTeeth

Florence Henderson has inspired generations of people through her portrayal of America's most beloved TV mother, Carol Brady, on one of the longest running situational comedies, The Brady Brunch. Today Florence is still a role model but for a much different audience: senior citizens.

Henderson created the FloH Club as an organization to assist senior citizens with understanding and embracing technology, as she described in an interview with Dear Doctor magazine. “I was inspired to create the FloH Club because of my own fear of technology and because I didn't want to keep asking my children for help,” she said.

And while Henderson was blessed with naturally straight teeth and has had no cosmetic work done, she is not opposed to it. “I wouldn't care how old I was, if I had misaligned teeth or felt I needed cosmetic dentistry I would certainly do it!”

One teeth-straightening option many adults consider is clear orthodontic aligners. They are an excellent way for self-conscious adults to align their teeth without feeling that they will appear as an awkward “brace-faced” youth — a look that is commonplace for the teenage years.

But what are clear aligners? They are an alternative system to traditional braces that use a sequence of individual, custom-fitted trays that are clear and removable to gradually straighten teeth. They are usually recommended for correcting mild to moderate spacing problems or crowding of the teeth, and for cases in which there are no major issues with your bite (i.e., your back teeth fit together properly and biting forces are distributed evenly on all of your teeth).

To learn more about this method of aligning teeth, you can continue reading the Dear Doctor magazine article “Clear Orthodontic Aligners.” Or you can contact us today to schedule an appointment so that we can conduct a thorough examination and discuss what treatment options will be best for you. Dr. Brad Beasley is an Alabama-based dentist who has been repeatedly recognized for his award-winning cosmetic dentistry. He is committed to helping his patients get back their beautiful smiles and regain their confidence.

According to estimates from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, most cosmetic dentists like Dr. Beasley expect steady or increasing revenues from aesthetic dental procedures each year. This is largely due to the fact that the vast majority of Americans are extremely smile-conscious. When a patient is afraid or hesitant to smile, it can affect his willingness to participate in social settings and even have an effect on his performance and success at work.Dentistry

Cosmetic Solutions

Dr. Beasley offers a wide variety of cosmetic solutions for his dental patients at his Huntsville, AL cosmetic dentistry. Dental veneers provide patients with a relatively quick and superficial way to make a tooth look much better. The veneer is white, solid and polished to an attractive shine. It covers up discolored teeth and teeth that don’t have an ideal shape. Dental implants provide patients with a complete tooth replacement from root to tip. Dr. Beasley also offers professional teeth whitening -- the tooth brightening service can be completed in his office (Zoom!) or at the patient’s home using take-home trays.

A Unique Service: Botox

Beasley Cosmetic & General Dentistry also offers some services that don’t specifically have to do with the teeth, like Botox. It is very possible for a patient to leave his office looking and feeling like a new person. The boost in confidence is life-changing.

Our goal is to provide comprehensive cosmetic services for our patients. One of the major underlying issues for my patients is a lack of confidence due to their appearance. They are often surprised and please to learn that their issue can be easily resolved with a veneer or a one-hour whitening session and Dr. Beasley is available to provide a proper consultation for the best treatment option.

When in need of cosmetic dentistry, Huntsville, AL area residents are encouraged to call Dr. Beasley’s office on East Hobbs Street to schedule an initial consultation. Appointments can be requested online or by calling a friendly staff member at (888) 860-5114.

CrownLengtheningcanIncreaseYourRestorationOptions

A crown is an effective way to save a tooth and restore its form and function. These life-like “caps” that fit over and are permanently attached to teeth have been used for decades with good results.

For this type of restoration to be effective, though, there must be enough of the natural tooth remaining above the gum line for the crown to “grab on to.” This poses a problem if the tooth has broken or decayed too close to the gum tissue.

Fortunately, there is a way to expose more of the remaining tooth for applying a crown. Known as crown lengthening, this surgical procedure is also used for “gummy” smiles, where normal tooth length is obscured by excess gum tissue that makes the teeth appear shorter.

We begin the procedure by first numbing the tooth and gum area with a local anesthetic. We then make tiny incisions inside the gum line on both the tongue and cheek side of the tooth to create a small flap. With this area below the gum line now open to view, we then determine whether we need to remove excess gum tissue or a small amount of bone around the tooth to expose more of the tooth itself. We then position the opened gum tissue against the bone and tooth at the appropriate height to create an aesthetic result.

You shouldn’t experience any discomfort during the procedure, which usually takes about sixty minutes for a single tooth area (which needs to involve at least three teeth for proper blending of the tissues). The pressures and vibrations from equipment, as well as any post-procedure discomfort, are similar to what you would encounter with a tooth filling. After the gum tissue has healed (about six to eight weeks), we are then able to fit and attach a crown onto the extended area.

Crown lengthening a small area may result in an uneven appearance if you’re dealing within the aesthetic zone. One option in this case is to consider undergoing orthodontic treatment first to correct the potential discrepancy that may result from surgery. After orthodontics, we can perform crown lengthening on just the affected tooth and still achieve an even smile.

Crown lengthening is just one of many tools we have to achieve tooth restorations for difficult situations. Using this technique, we can increase your chances of achieving both renewed tooth function and a more beautiful smile.

If you would like more information on crown lengthening, please contact us or schedule an appointment for a consultation. You can also learn more about this topic by reading the Dear Doctor magazine article “Saving Broken Teeth.”

AWorld-ClassSmile

He’s the world’s highest-paid soccer player: a forward on the Spanish club Real Madrid, and captain of the Portuguese national team. His super-toned body is featured in a series of advertisements, and he’s regularly seen with a supermodel on his arm. So would it surprise you to know that it took a bit of dental work to help Cristiano Ronaldo get a world-class smile?

You might never guess it to look at him now — but when he was 18 years old, and just starting his professional career with Manchester United in England, Ronaldo wore ceramic braces to correct a set of teeth that were quite a bit… off-sides. (As pictures from that time show, his teeth were out of alignment and had irregular spacing.) Yet in a relatively short time, his smile was completely transformed.

Ceramic braces are the treatment of choice for many sports stars and celebrities — and plenty of “regular” folks too. They work just like traditional all-metal braces, exerting a gentle force that slowly moves the teeth into better positions. But they have one major difference: They’re a good deal harder to notice.

That’s because instead of having brackets made of metal, this style of braces uses a high-tech ceramic material to attach the archwire to the teeth. The brackets blend right in with the natural shade of the tooth, so all you can see from a distance is the thin metal wire. That makes them a great orthodontic option for image-conscious celebs (like Tom Cruise and Faith Hill, who both wore them) — as well as anyone who may be concerned that traditional metal braces don’t fit in with their “look”.

In addition to ceramic braces, there are other, less-visible orthodontic treatments that can work just as well in many situations. One is lingual braces, which are similar to traditional braces — except they are applied on the tongue-side of the teeth, making them truly invisible. Another is clear aligners, a series of transparent plastic trays that are worn 22 hours a day and gradually move the teeth into more pleasing positions. What’s the best way to know which system is right for you? Come in and talk to us about your options!

Besides braces, did Cristiano Ronaldo have other cosmetic dental work (like teeth whitening) done? It’s possible, but he’s not saying exactly. Yet, as he told a Portuguese magazine, “I feel good about myself and that’s the most important thing.”

If you would like more information about ceramic braces or other orthodontic treatments, please contact us or schedule an appointment for a consultation. You can learn more in the Dear Doctor articles “The Magic of Orthodontics” and “Orthodontics For The Older Adult.”
